We are headed into a period of solitude – which need not be empty. For nearly a thousand years monastic seclusion included the study of music – with the idea that solitude was the ideal environment to contemplate the spiritual implications of that language. Music is the language of the soul, it needs no words to affect us, it crosses cultural space and time, yet we lack the time to practice our listening of it. For better or worse, we have that space now.
